The Student Health Service (SHS) offers medical evaluation and treatment and/or referral for outpatient problems.  Students in need of medical care should first call for an appointment or advice.  Appointments are usually available the same day and always within 24 hours. If necessary, students with urgent problems may be directed by the clinician to come in without an appointment.  Hours of operation, clinical services, and costs are described in the SHS website listed above.  ALL students under the age of 26, regardless of program of study, part-time or full-time, degree or non-degree status, are required by DC law to provide documentation of immunity to Tetanus, Measles/Mumps/Rubella and Chickenpox. International students and Medical / Health Sciences students should check the SHS site for additional recommendations/requirements.

Health Insurance
For your convenience, GW offers a voluntary student health insurance plan with optional spouse and dependant coverage. Since GW does not require proof of coverage, the University strongly encourages all students to carry health insurance. If you have coverage on your own or as a dependent under your parent's or spouse's policy or as an employee, find out what kind of a plan you have (HMO, PPO, Indemnity, Service, etc.), what the policy covers and does not cover,
how to file a claim, and what to do in case of an emergency. In particular, be aware of possible coverage issues because of eligibility, age, geographic location, in-network vs. out-of-network providers, pre-existing condition exclusions, and prior authorization requirements. Many students may no longer be eligible for coverage under a parent's plan depending on their age.  Be sure you have a copy of your insurance card and carry it with you whenever you seek medical care.

If you need health insurance, the University offers a health insurance program developed especially for GW students. For more information about the GW Student Health Insurance Plan (underwritten by Aetna) which also fulfills coverage requirements for international students, you can contact:
