Can I use the Student Health Service?
All currently registered full time and part time students matriculated in a degree program at The George Washington University are eligible for services. Non degree seeking students registered for at least 12 hours of academic credit in the current semester are also eligible. Eligibility does not apply to Center for Professional Development (CPD) students, students on a leave of absence at the beginning of the academic year, and non degree students taking less than 12 hours of academic credit per semester.
What services are available?
The Student Health Service offers medical evaluation and treatment and/or referral for outpatient problems. Students in need of medical care should always call for an appointment. If necessary, students with urgent problems can be seen on a walk-in basis.

Do I need Health Insurance?
The University strongly recommends that all students obtain health insurance.
GW offers a comprehensive sickness and accident health insurance plan for students and dependants. Information and application forms can be accessed through our website: gwired.gwu.edu/shs or directly from the underwriter?s website: www.chickering.com
Does the health insurance provide coverage if I am out of the area?
The Student Health Insurance Plan offers coverage throughout the United States and internationally.
How to I enroll in the Plan?
Enrollment can be done electronically during the open enrollment period. If you need to enroll after this period, please contact Chickering to consult about limited exceptions.
Do I need any immunizations?
All students under the age of 26 need to provide proof of immunity to Tetanus, Measles/Mumps/Rubella and Chickenpox, according to DC Law. The form can be downloaded from our website: gwired.gwu.edu/shs (click on ?Immunization Requirement?). Your private physician can fill it out, give you any inoculations and sign it. Keep a copy for your records and fax or mail the original to the SHS.
If you don?t have a private physician, you can request a copy of your immunization records from a previous college or school. Complete the demographic information on our form, attach a copy of your immunization record, and mail everything to our office.
If you need any immunizations, you can obtain them at the Student Health Service during our regular hours of operations for a fee.
Where can I go for my regular gynecological exam?
Annual exams, PAP smears and mammograms can be scheduled with a private gynecologist or The GWU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (741-2500). Please take your insurance information with you as you will be charged as a private patient. The GW Student Health Insurance Plan provides coverage for one routine visit/per year when it includes a PAP smear and/or a mammogram.
