GW Lingo

Jargon is part of the fun of belonging to the GW community. Students, faculty, staff, neighbors and even parents, both new and seasoned, bandy about words and phrases strongly identified with our University. GW jargon is a living, evolving language and the list of terms is updated from time to time.

Here are a few of the A to Zs of GW's everyday lingo as you learn to navigate your way:

2000 Penn: GW's own mall with restaurants and shops, located at 2000 Pennslyvania Ave. NW

ABP: Au Bon Pain - the French bakery/cafe in 2000 Penn.

Aladin: Gelman Libary's computerized cart catalog

Big George: GW's biggest (inflatable) mascot

BY GEORGE: The newspaper fo the GW Community produced by the Office of University Relations

CADE: The Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Education, located in  Thurston Hall at 1900 F Street, NW.

Cherry Tree: GW's official student yearbook

Colonial Army: A student organization focused on supporting GW Athletics and spirit at GW.

Colonial Cash: GW's all-access dining and spending system. You can use this system at many food services both on and off campus. Using your GWorld card with Colonial Cash in the Marvin Center J Street allows you tax-exempt dining.

Colonial Invasion: GW Spirit celebration during Spirit Week, marking the official start of the basketball season. This event is usually in October.

Columbian Square: The main seating area off the J Street food court in the Marvin Center.

DSS: Disability Support Services, located on the second floor of the Marvin Center

EMeRG: Emergency Medical Response Group

FB: Foggy Bottom

GWeekly: A weekly e-mail, send to all students, listing activities that student organizations and departments are putting on for the week (both for undergraduates and graduate students)

GW Hatchet: The student newspaper

GW News Center: GW's office for official news, information, and media relations.

HellWell: The Lerner Health and Wellness Center located at 23rd and G.

HOVA: Hall on Virginia Avenue-Graduate Housing

Hippo: GW's unofficial mascot

Hippodrome: A place to play billiards, go bowling, or eat at the WOW restaurant, located on the fifth floor of the Marvin Center.

Inaugural Ball: A ball hosted by the University every four years to honor inauguration of the Nation's president and vice president.

ISO: International Services Office

J Street: GW's dining options on the first floor of the Marvin Center

Kogan Plaza: The outdoor plaza in the center of campus on H Street.

MSSC: Multicultural Student Services Center

MVC: The George Washington University's Mount Vernon Campus

MyGW: The internet hub for GW students that holds the GW directory, lets students register for classes, load Colonial Cash on GWorlds, etc.

OCS: Office of Community Service

UCC: University Counseling Center

UPD: University Police Department

VC: Visitor Center
